No one can simply opt out of being a human being, and part of being human is the opportunity to make choices. A lot of people have convinced themselves that by staying out of it they aren’t affected by it. Or that the ability to influence anyone else isn’t available because they don’t get involved. And though you may be able to avoid some criticism that way, in truth your support has already been placed. It is for the people who speak into your life. The news reports you listen to, the gossip you entertain, the shows you watch, the music you listen to, and mainly the people you are around. Which is why building our culture is so important.
Every time someone makes a statement in your presence without you speaking up, you have put your approval on that idea. But maybe you are conflicted because of something that’s been tugging at you. That you see the road you’re headed down and have a check in your heart. Something telling you that you don’t belong there. When you delay and teeter on making a change, you open yourself up to emotional tidal waves, being split down the middle, too afraid to make a change, which only brings misery to your life. Your indecision plays an active support role for the obvious. Something only you can see, something between you and God.
However, what you may not know is how good it is to just let go. People who are too afraid sadly keep themselves from experiencing the freedom that awaits on the other side of that split-decision. Doing the right thing may be easy to avoid, or maybe even be hard to do. It usually comes from such a quiet voice that becomes easy to ignore. But avoiding it is just enough to rob you of the peace you deserve to have. Why continue to torture yourself by allowing your life to simply be a series of compromises? Who can feel the savor of living life when it is clouded by the emotions of timidity?
