It seemed like forever, but I eventually made it back home from that long season of being in West Texas. When I settled in, I felt different, like I was a new person. It started to feel like being between two worlds in a mystical subjective sort of way.  But I spent my time being full of ideas, creativity, music, and art. I had a lot of time to myself where I could sit and think that summer, and I loved it. There’s something about summer nights that seems to create a sense of nostalgia. It was in that space where I had the freedom to step away from it all and rethink all my passions. It became a perfect breeding ground for a new style of art to be born.

A three-sided world

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

It all started with this drawing here. I got into making triangles and began to notice the number 3 jumping out at me in almost every aspect of life.

[/fusion_text][fusion_lightbox type=”” full_image=”https://dylanwheeler.art/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/the-everything-original-concept-drawing.png” video_url=”” thumbnail_image=”https://dylanwheeler.art/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/the-everything-original-concept-drawing-300×269.png” alt_text=”” description=”” class=”” id=””][/fusion_lightbox][fusion_text]

At first I was only trying to draw a triangle, one that had wings made of fire, but it soon became something else. By the end of summer I began to notice this pattern was able to break apart shapes in a fundamental way. I stumbled into a way of deconstructing visual elements and shapes. Almost like an artistic shape-shifting design that was camouflaged behind what we see. This allowed the objects in my drawings to be broken apart and rejoined to other contrary elements in a completely seamless way. It started to change the way I saw the physical world as well as my artwork itself. It became hard not to dwell on this visual concept, something connected to everything by this underlying organic pattern. A pattern that almost seemed to be the glue holding it all together. At least in the world of shading, light, lines, and color. This quickly became my whole artistic focus, challenging me to think beyond myself. Beyond what one sees on the surface, bringing me into another way of seeing the world.

Take it to the next level

I decided to refine the original image with something more specific. Cleaning up the edges and drawing well defined lines would make it easier to use down the road. This proved to be more difficult than it seemed. It was an endeavor that would take the rest of that year to develop. It may seem insignificant, and it may seem a little too simplistic, but this is actually a more complicated pattern than you might imagine. It was very easy to throw off the whole look of the image by only having a few lines out of place. So every line and curve mattered.

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

The image uses elements in your own field of view to bring out somewhat of an optical illusion. For example, the white space inside the pattern is typically called negative space, but here it is part of the pattern. This pattern uses the negative space all around it to pull in everything else in your line of sight, adding them to the art. The idea is to stare at the triangle long enough until it becomes a little distorted by your vision. This distortion works by what’s called preservation of light, which is what gives humans the ability to enjoy motion picture. The preservation of light in your eye begins to burn a negative image onto your retina much like a camera would. Where everything that is bright will start to burn a dark image onto your retina and everything dark will start to show a brighter, and so on.  After this happens your vision begins to have a slight distortion. You’ll notice the shapes will begin to look a little different, as certain outlines try to shift in your peripherals. You’ll start to notice the pattern in your eyes, connecting both the artwork and what your peripherals see. It’s not always about the drawing itself , but the drawing helps to bring out what’s already there. The invisible pattern hiding in the liquid covering our eyes.

More than art

The more I worked on this, the more I realized these ideas spill over into other areas of life. Some patterns resemble other things in life that have nothing to do with each other. There are so many similarities in life that reveal the organic nature of life itself. It started to become easier and easier to see how everything truly is connected. It was difficult to see at the time, just how deep the rabbit hole really goes…
