If you only got one thing out of this book, I would hope that it’s what I’m about to share with you now. This simple concept that gets overlooked by so many churches might be the most helpful point affecting our daily lives.

In Romans 6:7 there is a verse that reads “For he that is dead is freed from sin.” What I am suggesting to you is that this is either a bad translation or it’s an area where Paul was being a little more poetic in his delivery, which makes this verse a little hard to grasp on the outset. I believe he’s actually referring to the ‘death of self’ and you can realize what he’s saying through the context. That we can be free from sin, not by needing to die and go to heaven, but to allow our selfishness to die, then we are free from sin. The surrounding verses made much more sense to me after I caught this.

There are so many other verses that hint to the idea that sin and evil can only touch you under certain parameters. And this verse is the key to all of them. For example, lust can only tempt you with the things you care about. Evil can only affect you with the opportunity you allow it to have. Sin only appears when we are more concerned with ourselves than anything, or anyone else. When you are completely broken from all your selfish behavior, then sin has nothing in you, and cannot legally interfere with your life. How many times has God tried to help us by allowing us to be completely broken as we resisted every second of it. God  doesn’t bring sickness or hardship on us to teach us a lesson, He wants us to let go of all the baggage we carry around so He can help us. If we are doing things our own way, striving to hold on, it keeps us from flowing in the Spirit. “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2 We cannot enter into that type of life holding on to the idea that we know better. We must let go and allow the gift of brokenness to bring us back to life.

Every man is right in his own eyes until you’ve become broken inside. Allow the Lord to unlock your soul and open wide your spiritual eyes.

Nobody sets a trap with sour bait, and lies are always convenient to believe. A temptation only comes through the access you’ve granted it. And burdens only bind with what you will not release.

“For He who is dead to self is free from sin.” (Romans 6:7) released from the flesh and the perspective we were born in.

Can anything overtake you without first being allowed? How many lessons in life were started because you were being too proud?

Is it not merely your own selfishness that is being tempted and drawn away when you are unwilling to follow the formula that leads to the everlasting way of ways?

What if we let go of our self-seeking illusions that the flesh reaches to grasp? For the only way to be anything at all is to let go of all you have.
