When everything changed

Here is a picture of where our old house used to be. Looking at it brings back memories of dust, sun, hard work, and doing a lot of thinking. It was the worst circumstances that led to finding the best reward.

My big issue with Christianity

It’s good to remember where you came from and what God has brought you through to bring you where you are. Sometimes it’s easy for us to forget who we used to be and what we were like in the past. In this post I would like to share one big issue I had just as I became a believer. I asked God why does so many good art and music feel so dark and why do so many talented artists seem to hate you? Is there a positive form of creativity, that’s doesn’t seem hokey? If there is, I couldn’t see it.

My answer

As I’m sure you know God doesn’t always answer in the way we expect. The answers to my questions did not come the way I expected either. I don’t remember there being a single moment where everything changed. It seemed to happen over a period of time. That period began when my brother and I got into some trouble and was sent to alternative school for a half semester. To get away from bad influences, I decided to go live with my dad in West Texas in the middle of nowhere and finish my alternative school there. That’s where I spent my time in the desert to connect with God, although I never grew a beard. 
 
The picture I added is a shot of where we lived. (The red square is the place where my dad’s little house was. Which got torn down by whoever bought the land.)
 
That’s the year that everything changed for me, which is good because my heart had grown very hard and callus. I have become cynical, bitter, and dark. But God spoke to me through art.  Interestingly enough, He showed me new ideas and a new approach to creativity. Something that started to get my attention on all the different patterns in nature and life. I began to notice there was a pattern behind patterns. Something that seemed to go deeper than art or music. I started seeing a connection to behavior. I started to have creative ideas that began to help me climb out of that dark pit and begin walking in the light through His love.

Back to  reality

That year I felt like my old life died. I remember when I came back to the city, back home, I felt so different. I felt like I had more of a conscience. I felt like a Christian. I felt more alive.

So even though that year had some pretty crappy circumstances, it was the year that everything changed. It was the year where the Lord took everything that was dark and flipped it all around to make it shine.  Things are not always what they seem to be. Sometimes you have to go with it and just LET GO. And after you get past it you’ll look back and notice something beautiful that came out of it. The Christian world needs artists to shine as bright as anybody is able to see. Because it takes an artist to move the culture through a change, and change is needed. It begins with us.  If you feel the same, I would love to meet you.
