Take a step back and look at your life, can you think of a time you assumed something was true that turned out to be dead wrong? What if we could avoid those problems before something happens? I believe we gain a level of clarity in our everyday lives by removing an unspoken issue that we all deal with deep down inside.

The culprit

There is a layer of misunderstanding that lives right in front of our nose. The problems that happen are caused the same way every single time through a nasty little thing we call pride. Nothing is ever what it seems when our pride starts getting in the way, when we can’t see beyond ourselves. It’s when we’re not humble enough to see beyond our own mistakes that we inevitably fall into believing whatever we want to believe. People see what they want to see, until the problem is so big that we’re forced to turn it all around. But we don’t have to wait till then, we can force ourselves to do this before it falls apart. “When pride comes, then comes shame, but with the lowly is wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2)

Doing the work

Nothing’s ever what it seems, and it’s a true statement until the day you leave this world. There’s a thin layer of deception that is trying to cover everything you know. The only way to get beyond it is by uncovering the truth. But the truth is hard to hear because we so hesitate being wrong. We don’t want to do the mental exercise and burn the calories on all the things that point out all our mistakes. Besides, we’re already stressed out enough as it is. Why add to the pile deliberately?

Don’t blame yourself

We were born into this world not knowing anything at all. And everything we know is a reflection of what someone else told us to believe. So how can you blame yourself when you uncover something real? I doubt you sat down one day and decided to believe a lie. These things were sold to us by well-meaning people who were also lied to as well. Something that goes all the way back to the beginning, a destructive flame kept alive by pride.

There’s more under the surface than what we can see. The more mindful we are, the less we miss on our chance to be free.

Embrace the grace

Struggling between what’s right and wrong is no fun way to live your life… just being stressed out all the time no matter how much you try. The problem is never what it seems to be, and the solution always takes a different kind of key. “The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but the same thing happens to them all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:11) But we can embrace the grace of what the Lord has done in our lives. If we had any idea we would spend the rest of our life wiping our eyes. Especially when we see that the only thing he wants us to do is just say “yes,” let go, and believe.
So what’s the solution to avoid the problems we face that’s caused by pride? Soften your heart, forgive even when you don’t feel like you should, give people the benefit of the doubt, be teachable even in areas you excel at, make wisdom the goal rather than knowledge, and retreat to the Lord’s instruction.
“For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nothing things that are: so that no one may boast in His presence.” (1 Corinthians 1:25-29)
“A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will attain to sound counsel.” (Proverbs 1:5)
